Recharge Your Art Practice by Trying New Color Schemes!

When summer hits, we’re ready for a fresh start: summer clothes that haven’t seen the light of day in about nine months, new travel adventures, hot weather drinks, and frozen treats that we weren’t in the mood for during the winter. You may be feeling that your art practice is also ready for some fresh changes, too. After all, we need to keep evolving, shifting, and experimenting to keep our practice energized.

My favorite way to recharge my art practice is playing with new color schemes. While I have signature color palettes that are key aspects of my artistic style, I am not a prisoner of those palettes. I love to mix paint colors and try out new color combinations to see what excites me. This not only refreshes my artistic spirit, it keeps my work from becoming stale.

Trying new color schemes is a low-commitment, safe way to experiment with changes to your artwork. I like to think of it as the equivalent of changing the wall paint, bedspread, rug, or throw cushions in a room as opposed to doing construction. You aren’t completely changing your artistic medium or style (which are very big and disruptive changes that are not to be undertaken lightly—like construction projects!); you are simply zhuzhing things up a bit.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll often see me playing with color mixing and new color combinations to keep things fresh and exciting. I love providing tips for my followers about color mixing and abstract painting! I hope you’ll follow me on Instagram if you aren’t already a follower.

I hope that you’re having a wonderful summer and that you’re ready to invigorate your art practice with some fresh new color schemes!
